ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER (ADD)

In this issue I write about the topic of ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder. This is a syndrome usually diagnosed in childhood. It is often characterized by a persistent pattern of impulsiveness and a short attention span. This condition will likely interfere with a person’s academic, occupational, and social performance. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is the same thing with hyperactivity thrown in.

ADD has been an important issue, primarily for children, for a long time but has become better known in recent years especially as it relates to adults. Although there has been some controversy about overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis as well as overmedicating, there is no question that the medical community agrees that ADD is a real disorder with both a neurological and perhaps a genetic basis.

Over the years I have seen many adult clients with ADD. They often come seeking help with other problems, unaware that they have been struggling with this as an underlying cause of their conflict.

Adult ADD

It is estimated that 3-6% of children have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Although there are no absolute statistics regarding adults or children with this syndrome, some scientists speculate that about half of that number carries the disorder into adulthood.
