Here we are in June of 2005…WOW! I know it is a commonly heard cliché but time does fly by quickly. Most of us look forward to summer for vacations and time to get a little lazy. However in South Florida we also face the inevitable hurricane season, a fact that can add some stress to our lives.

Stress can be defined as: A mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.

Studies have shown that stress, particularly chronic stress, can seriously damage us physically as well as emotionally. It can cause heart and gastrointestinal track problems as well as compromise the immune system. It can also cause a person to become anxious, angry or even depressed. It is not something to be dismissed or taken lightly.
